About AAT Level 3 Course

AAT level 3 is a great level in the AAT accounting qualification because it builds on the knowledge you have learnt at level 2, and sets you up for level 4.

A lot of students worry that level 3 is going to be a big step up from level 2 and therefore a harder level to study. However, the knowledge built from your level 2 studies will give you a great kick start towards the Advanced Diploma in Accounting qualification.

AAT level 3 is made up of 6 units:

  • Final accounts preparation
  • Management account costing
  • Advanced level synoptic
  • Indirect tax
  • Spreadsheets

We advise learn each unit, one at a time and sit an exam at the end of each unit, before moving on to the next unit.

Who is the AAT Level 3 Course For?

The AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting offers technical training in accounting and is ideal for anyone wishing to pursue a career in accountancy and finance.

The purpose of the AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting is to provide students with the specialist knowledge and skills required for progressing either to employment in an accounting or finance role, or to enable progression to further study in accountancy and finance. This qualification is a progression route for students who have achieved either the AAT Foundation

Certificate in Accounting or the AAT Foundation Diploma in Accounting and Business. It is also suitable for those who are at a more intermediate level and looking to develop their skills in accounting, or for those who have already started working in finance and who have a need and desire to attain formal recognition of their skills.

What are the level 3 course modules?

Advanced bookkeeping

This module will enhance your bookkeeping knowledge from level 2.

During this module, you will expand your journal and trial balance knowledge with extended trial balances and all the adjustments. It will also show you how to deal with assets such as depreciation and disposals. Finally, it will teach you new ideas with accruals and prepayments.

This is a big unit with a lot of content but is a great unit to start level 3 with.

Final accounts preparation

This module flows nicely from what you learnt in advanced bookkeeping. The module will explain and teach you how partnership accounts are used.
It will also show you how to identify missing figures from incomplete records. It will bring in new elements like mark up and margin for working out profit. Finally, it also teaches you how to prepare a final set of accounts.

Management accounting: costing

During this module, you will build on your knowledge from the level 2 costing unit. It will teach you different costing methods, the different techniques used for short-term and long-term decision making. This will expand your knowledge when dealing with material, labour and overhead costs.

This is a big unit so allow yourself enough time to learn everything properly. If you can learn these vital techniques, it will set you up for the later management units at level 4.

Advanced level synoptic

The synoptic consists of professional ethics and questions from the first three units above. Ethics teaches you the correct way to deal with ethical situations in the workplace.

It is quite wordy but it’s important to know this as you need to understand the correct way to deal with things that come up in certain situations.

This exam is unique as it will also include questions from the first three units (advanced bookkeeping, final accounts preparation and management account costing).

Spreadsheets

Spreadsheets teach you how to use a piece of software called excel, how to input certain formulas to get excel to produce the information you require, how to produce pie charts and graphs etc.

You do not need any prior excel knowledge, everything you need to learn for this exam is covered in your materials.

Indirect tax

It's quite a short unit but don’t underestimate it. This teaches you how to deal with VAT using various methods in various different circumstances (in the UK and when dealing with items abroad) and how to complete a VAT report which is a crucial piece of information to know.

In this unit you do get access to some reference material which you can use when learning, when doing mocks and you can also use it in your actual exam (it is an overview and reminder of some of the important aspects of this unit.)

Level 3 Apprenticeship

Our Accounts Assistant programme builds the foundations needed to work in a professional business environment and sets you up for a career in accountancy.

The programme helps you to develop all the skills and behaviours you will need to work in a modern accounting environment such as how to work effectively, communication and producing information. In addition to this, our level 2 accountant qualification will equip you with all the necessary technical knowledge by embedding the AAT Level 2 qualification as part of the apprenticeship programme.

The Assistant Accountant Apprenticeship is equivalent to two A-level passes.
