About AAT Level 2 Course

AAT level 2 course is the entry-level into the AAT qualification. What better way to start your accountancy journey than with the UK’s leading AAT course provider.

Completing Level 2 AAT is the most important step of them all. This is because AAT certificate level will teach you all the basics of accounting. In addition to this, it will lay a solid foundation for your future in accountancy. This inevitably means you will be better equipped to do well in the other levels of the AAT qualification.

AAT level 2 is made up of 5 units:

  • Bookkeeping transactions
  • Bookkeeping controls
  • Elements of costing
  • Foundation level synoptic
  • Using accounting software

You will learn each unit, one at a time and sit an exam at the end of each unit, before moving on to the next unit.

Who is the AAT Level 2 Course For?

The AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting is an ideal starting point for anyone wishing to pursue a career in accountancy or finance. The purpose of the AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting is to offer grounding in the core accounting knowledge and skills needed to progress either to employment or to further study.

This qualification is suitable for young people who have just left school as well as for adults returning to work after a break or for anyone wishing to change career. The Foundation Certificate is open to those who are working and those who are not currently in employment. This qualification could also help someone who is already working in an entry-level finance role to progress in their career by offering them development and formal recognition of their skills.

AAT does not set any prerequisites for the study of the AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting. However, for the best chance of success, we recommend that students begin their studies with a good standard of English and maths.

Bookkeeping transactions

This teaches you the double entry bookkeeping system (debits and credits).

It teaches you about the different types of accounts (expense, income, asset, liability), how to identify them and what you need to do with them.

Bookkeeping controls

This builds on what you learned in bookkeeping transactions.

This unit teaches you about how the control accounts are used, how to identify any errors and how to make journal entries to correct any errors or make any adjustments.

Elements of costing

This is the foundation of management accounting.

It will teach you about how to value inventory, how to classify costs and how to deal with overheads.

Foundation level synoptic

This teaches you a subject called “working effectively in finance”.

This will help explain the ins and outs of working in an office environment. It will teach you good working practices and include a bit of professional ethics.

This exam is unique as it will also include questions from the first three units.

Using accounting software

This is the final unit at level 2. This will teach you how to use a piece of accounting software.

You will learn how to navigate the software, how to input data correctly and how to prepare reports to show the data in a meaningful way.

Exams

To gain the full AAT level 2 qualification, you will need to sit 5 exams, one for each of the above units.

The Synoptic exam also includes a written task. You will need to show that you understand a subject by explaining it in written form. This will test that you have retained the knowledge from the prior three units.

Level 2 Apprenticeship

Our Accounts Assistant programme builds the foundations needed to work in a professional business environment and sets you up for a career in accountancy.

The programme helps you to develop all the skills and behaviours you will need to work in a modern accounting environment such as how to work effectively, communication and producing information. In addition to this, our level 2 accountant qualification will equip you with all the necessary technical knowledge by embedding the AAT Level 2 qualification as part of the apprenticeship programme.
