Meet Tom Burke, our East Anglia Apprentice of the Quarter

At First Intuition, we’re proud to celebrate the hard work, dedication, and success of our apprentices. Each quarter, we highlight an individual who has gone above and beyond in their studies and workplace.

In this interview, Tom, our East Anglian Apprentice of the Quarter, shares his experience, insights, and advice for others looking to follow a similar path.

Congratulations on being chosen for First Intuition East Anglia Apprentice of the Quarter Award. How does it feel to be recognised as our Apprentice of the Quarter?

I feel a great sense of accomplishment and pride in myself.

What made you choose a career in accountancy? Was there anything that triggered your decision?

I have always been interested in numbers and the behind-the-scenes of a business.

How did you approach your studies and what resources/support that FI offer did you find most useful? Do you have any study tips for other apprentices about to start their studies?

I made notes during lectures for each chapter, used FI videos on topics I was unsure of, practise questions in the book. A lot of mock practice on FI Learn and AAT website as well as Greenlight tests.

How do you manage juggling work & study?

I dedicate at least 1.30 hours a day after work to study.

How have you been supported by your company and colleagues throughout your apprenticeship so far? How has this contributed to both your success with both your qualification and also adding value to your workplace?

If I am ever unsure of a topic, my colleagues offer to show me their approach to a question, I am also given time off for attending lectures as well as exams etc.

Why would you recommend the apprenticeship route for others?

I would recommend the apprenticeship route, as it offers the opportunity to gain qualifications while working and earning. You also learn more as you have the workplace and First Intuition to help build new skills.

Let’s hear from Tom’s skills coach, Sophie

When asked about their progress within their apprenticeship so far, Tom‘s skills coach, Sophie, said, “Tom has demonstrated excellent determination and perseverance as he has been showing up consistently for support sessions with our Tutor, Betty, and re-attending courses to aid his development. It has not been an easy journey for Tom, but his hard work is paying off!  On top of this, Tom’s strength of character has truly shone as he has managed to complete all Portfolio Templates and meet his OTJ minimum requirement ahead of his planned EPA to allow more time to focus on his revision.”
