Hear more about Sinead’s apprenticeship journey and the advice she’d share with others following in her footsteps.
What are you most proud of from your experience to date?
I’m most proud of how far I’ve come in my AAT apprenticeship journey, especially balancing work and study while navigating the challenges of dyslexia. Passing key exams and being able to apply what I’ve learned in college to my role at work has been incredibly rewarding.
What made you choose a career in accountancy? Was there anything that triggered your decision?
I’ve always enjoyed working with numbers and problem-solving. What really triggered my decision was seeing how accountancy offers a structured career path with clear progression and the opportunity to make a real impact in a business.
How do you approach your apprenticeship studies, and what resources/support that First Intuition offers do you find most useful?
I approached my studies with a consistent routine and used FI’s structured materials, especially the online learning platform and tutor support.
Do you have any study tips for other apprentices starting their studies?
My tip is to break topics into manageable chunks and use visual aids or colour coding, especially helpful if you’re a visual learner like me.
How do you manage juggling work and study?
I use a calendar to block out study time and ensure I communicate effectively with my team about deadlines.
How have your company and colleagues supported you throughout your apprenticeship so far? How has this contributed to your success with both your qualification and adding value to UHY?
My team at UHY has been incredibly supportive, from giving me time to study to offering mentorship and encouragement. Their belief in me has boosted my confidence and enabled me to apply my learning directly to my role. I’ve taken the initiative to integrate what I’ve learned into my daily tasks, which has not only reinforced my understanding but also contributed to my progress in the AAT qualification. This proactive approach has helped me pass key assessments and grow more competent in my responsibilities.
You’ve achieved so much despite the additional challenges of dyslexia. How have you adapted your approach to studying and working, and what advice would you give to other apprentices who may face similar challenges?
I’ve adapted by using tools like coloured overlays and mind maps. I also ask for clarification when needed and take extra time to review materials.
What are your goals/plans for when you finish your apprenticeship?
Once I complete my apprenticeship, I plan to continue my studies towards chartered status and take on more responsibility at work. I’m excited to grow into a role where I can mentor others and contribute to strategic decision-making, helping both clients and staff prosper and flourish.
Why would you recommend the apprenticeship route to others?
I would definitely recommend the apprenticeship route. It offers hands-on experience, structured learning, and great support. It’s a brilliant way to build both confidence and competence while earning and learning.
Congratulations again, Sinead, for this massive achievement, and thank you for letting us interview you.
