ACCA examiners’ reports are a valuable but often overlooked resource. Published after every exam sitting, they reveal what examiners look for, common student mistakes, and how to improve performance.

In this blog, ACCA tutor Emily Haigh shares five practical ways to make the most of these reports.

The examiners’ reports are produced by the ACCA on all modules and are available on the ACCA website for public use. The reports analyse actual ACCA exams from the point of view of the marker.

You can access them via the ACCA website:

How and when should you use the ACCA examiners’ reports?

Whilst students can access the reports at any time, they will be most useful when used in conjunction with attempting the recent ACCA exams. This is most likely to be during the revision phase. The read-through of the examiners’ reports that relate to that particular exam will help students understand how to improve their marks in their final exam.
Using the examiners’ reports as part of a debrief of papers attempted is time well spent, according to the ACCA, which has stated that students using the examiners’ reports are more likely to pass the final exam.

Why are the examiners’ reports useful?

The reports go through each question on actual ACCA exams and highlight common mistakes made by students and how to avoid them. The reports provide an insight into what the examiner is looking for on each question, and they guide you on how to approach each question and answer the question most effectively. This should also prevent students from going off on tangents that take up valuable time in the exam.

Here are 5 ways you can use the examiners’ reports to improve your ACCA studies:

1. The report clearly identifies what a good answer looks like.

Compare your answers for the past exams to the report. This will help you gain an understanding of how to improve your answers.

2. Learn from common mistakes and misconceptions. The report identifies where most students lose marks.

Make a list of the mistakes and actively try to avoid them when practising questions and mock exams. Use them to improve your exam technique even further.

3. The report helps students to improve their exam technique and time management.

Thoroughly read the comments regarding structure, question interpretation, and presentation. Practise writing concise, focused answers that mirror what the report has raised.

4. Improve your understanding of recurring themes and areas that the examiner focuses.

The report spots patterns, topics, and styles of questions that often cause confusion and problems amongst students. Make sure to prioritise these areas when revising, so you can tackle them effectively in a resit or future papers.

5. Use the report to enhance study sessions and mock exam practice.

After completing a past paper or mock exam, refer back to the examiners’ reports to benchmark your performance. Get in touch with tutors via our online forums or their email addresses or join study groups to understand specific examiner comments further.

How can I access the examiners’ reports?

They are available to all on the ACCA website. To help locate them, search for ‘examiners’ reports’ and the acronym of the paper you are working on. For example: ‘ACCA examiner’s report FR’ for the financial reporting module. You can access the report on the most recent and past real ACCA exam papers. Here is a link to the latest report:
