Choosing how to study CIMA is an important decision for any learner. Both the traditional exam route and the CGMA Finance Leadership Programme are recognised pathways to the CGMA qualification, but they are structured in very different ways. Understanding these differences can help you decide which route best fits your experience, learning style and circumstances.
What is the CGMA Finance Leadership Programme (FLP)?
CIMA’s CGMA FLP is a digital-first, subscription-based route to qualification. All learning and assessment for Objective Test module preparation takes place within CIMA’s online FLP platform, following the same syllabus as the CGMA Professional Qualification. Successfully completing the platform-based assessments provides exemptions from up to 13 Objective Test exams across the Certificate, Operational, Management and Strategic levels, meaning learners only need to sit the three Case Study exams.
The programme operates on a 12-month subscription, which includes access to the FLP platform, CIMA membership for the duration of the subscription, and no exam or exemption fees for E, F or P modules. Case Study exam fees still apply.
What is the traditional CIMA exam route?
The traditional route follows a more exam-focused structure. Learners study each module individually and sit an Objective Test exam for every E, F and P subject, alongside the three Case Study exams. In total, this can involve sitting up to 16 exams. Exams are taken at Pearson VUE test centres or via online invigilation, with learners choosing when to book each assessment.
How assessment and flexibility compare
One of the key differences between the two routes is how Objective Test modules are assessed. On the traditional route, assessment is based on formal exams. With FLP, assessment is continuous and competency-based, removing the need to book and sit Objective Test exams.
Both routes offer flexibility, but in different ways. The traditional route allows learners to plan their studies around individual exams, while FLP offers a start-anytime, self-paced approach that can allow learners to progress through learning more quickly if their circumstances allow.
Who each route may suit
The FLP is self-paced, so learners need to be self-motivated and able to manage their own study time. FLP is open to all learners but is often well suited to experienced professionals, learners returning to CIMA after a break, those not eligible for an apprenticeship, or learners who need a more flexible approach due to work, location or personal circumstances.
The traditional route may appeal to learners who prefer formal, exam-based assessment, want clear exam milestones, or enjoy more traditional learning formats such as classroom-based study.
