Next Steps

I enjoy taking complex financial data and analysing it, finding patterns and results, and using that to help make key strategic decisions, as well as communicating that information to non-financial stakeholders.

Is accounting a good career choice?

Yes, accountancy remains a resilient and rewarding profession. It offers strong career stability, solid earning potential, and diverse roles across industries, making it a smart long-term career choice.

Do I need a degree to become an accountant?

No, a degree isn’t strictly required. In the UK, for example, you can begin your accountancy career through professional routes like AAT, ACCA, CIMA, or ICAEW, which don’t require university study.

How do I become an accountant without a degree?

Focus on building foundational skills via certification programs (e.g., bookkeeping, accounting principles), gain practical experience through entry-level roles or apprenticeships, and proceed to professional qualifications.

What kinds of careers can accounting qualifications lead to?

Accounting qualifications equip you for a wide range of professions, including audit, tax, financial reporting, management consulting, forensic accounting, and more, across nearly every industry.

Is accountancy future-proof despite AI and automation?

Yes, though tech is transforming the profession, accountants are increasingly valued for strategic insights, financial analysis, and decision-making roles that AI can’t replicate.

What qualifications and entry criteria are needed for a career in accounting?

ACCA

  • ACCA typically requires two A‑Levels and three GCSEs (or equivalent), including English and maths.
  • If you hold a relevant degree or prior accounting qualifications, you may be exempt from some ACCA exams, allowing you to progress faster through the qualification.

CIMA

  • CIMA usually requires two A‑Levels and three GCSEs.
  • Graduates from any subject can also enter directly into the CIMA professional qualification, and First Intuition offers tailored training to support you through every stage.
  • Also, graduates with a degree in accounting, finance, or a related subject may be eligible for exemptions from some of the CIMA certificate or operational-level exams.

ICAEW

  • ICAEW Entry usually requires three A‑Levels and three GCSEs (or equivalent).
  • Graduates can join via the ACA graduate route, often combined with a training contract with an approved employer, and First Intuition’s expert tutors guide you through the full ACA journey.
  • If you have an accounting or finance degree, you may qualify for exemptions from some of the ACA’s certificate-level exams, reducing the number of exams you need to complete.

AAT

  • For AAT, there are no formal academic requirements, although English and maths at GCSE level are recommended.
  • AAT is a great starting point for school leavers, career changers, or anyone looking to build a strong foundation before progressing to ACCA, CIMA, or ICAEW, and First Intuition offers courses to support every step.
  • Students who already hold certain professional or academic qualifications may be exempt from some AAT units, allowing faster completion of the qualification.
