AAT Award in Bookkeeping

The AAT Award in Bookkeeping is a complete qualification aimed at those who are looking for an introduction to bookkeeping and accounting. There are no minimum entry criteria so anyone can sign up for it, even those with no accounting experience or previous qualifications.

The following study options are available from our London centre:

  • ABC Home Study - £150 (study guide, course notes, question bank and tutor support)
  • ABC Online Study - £250 (study guide, course notes, online lectures and question practice and tutor support)

Students who successfully complete the AAT Award in Bookkeeping will receive a certificate and may then progress directly to Level 3 of the AAT Qualification if they wish to continue their studies.

**Important changes affecting the ABC qualification from 1 July 2012**
The AAT intends to replace the existing ABC qualification with a new Certificate in Bookkeeping qualification in 2013. This means that new students wishing to take the ABC must register with AAT no later than 30 June 2012. All students will have until 30 June 2013 to complete the exam.

The ABC exam is a single computer based exam of 2 hours duration, split into 3 sections for each of the 3 units (see below). You don't have to become an AAT member to undertake the course, but you do need to email abcregistrations@aat.org.uk with the information below before you can sit the exam with us. Registration is free.

  • Full name and title
  • Date of birth
  • Home address
  • Email address
  • First Intuition centre code - BH10454

If you intend to follow up with the AAT Accounting Qualification you may prefer to register as a student member.

The AAT Award in Bookkeeping is made up of 3 units as follows:

  • Introduction to bookkeeping - double entry, balance sheet and profit & loss account
  • Accounting adjustments - nominal ledger, VAT, wages & salaries, accruals, fixed assets and leasing
  • Practical bookkeeping - sales & purchase ledgers, control accounts, cashbook and bank reconciliations

This qualification is a great introduction to accounting. Most students should aim to complete the exam within 3-6 months of starting their home study or online course.
